The end of the year is a crazy time. Not only are you trying to finish up teaching the curriculum, but there’s also state testing, field trips and always an insane amount of “fun” activities. Then of course cleaning and packing up a classroom (whatever your school requires, which varies) and giving stuff back to the kids. Summer birthdays can be easily forgotten about and can slip through the cracks until the very last minute (or-if you’re anything like me birthdays in general are very easily forgotten). Here are 5 ways to celebrate your summer birthdays ranging from big (more work) to small (least amount of work possible).
  1. Summer Birthday Celebration-individual

This would work if you usually do some sort of big celebration for your students’ birthdays. You give each of them a day of their own in April and May to celebrate early. They can bring in treats, get a gift from you and play a game. However you would normally do it, just jam pack all the summer birthdays into the end of the year.

  1. Summer Birthdays celebration-group

You can also put all the summer birthdays on one day and do a mini-party. Parents can send it treats but have them sign up so they aren’t all sending in the same thing. This knocks it all out in one day, but still takes a big chunk of time.

  1. Half-birthdays

Instead of jamming all the summer birthdays at the end of the year, you can celebrate students throughout the year by celebrating their half-birthday instead of their real birthday. Then they still have a day in school that makes them feel special.

  1. Mail them Birthday Letters

This idea requires a lot more memory in the summertime, so if you barely remember the birthdays during the school year this probably won’t work for you (hi, it’s me). But you can prep letters at the end of the school year with a message, stickers, or whatever you usually would give to students on their birthday. Then save them throughout the summer and mail it out a couple days before their birthday.

  1. Letters at the end of the year

This is my option this year. I will be printing out these birthday letters for summer, writing in my students name and signing my name. Put it in an envelope with a sheet of stickers (I like these ones!), a birthday sticker and seal it. Write on the front “Open on your Birthday!” and give it to the students on the last day of school. BOOM. DONE. It gives them something exciting to look forward to and it is off your hands for the summer.

As adults, birthdays aren’t really that fun anymore (sometimes). But for a kid they can be such a magical day. Remember that as you’re celebrating your students and give them something to remember!
